What is Dementia?

Dementia is a collective term for a group of neurological disorders that cause progressive cognitive decline, affecting memory, reasoning, and the ability to perform daily tasks.

Dementia occurs when brain cells become damaged, leading to a decline in cognitive function that gradually worsens over time. This can result in memory loss, confusion, difficulty with problem-solving, mood changes, and challenges in communication. The condition can affect people in different ways, depending on the type of dementia and the areas of the brain involved.

Although there is currently no cure for dementia, early diagnosis and the right support can help manage symptoms, slow progression in some cases, and improve quality of life. Research into treatment and care continues to advance, with therapies and lifestyle adjustments playing a key role in supporting those living with dementia.

Alex & Blessie

Alex had been the primary caregiver for his wife, Blessie, 82, who was diagnosed with vascular dementia. He was determined to care for her himself, but as her condition progressed, he found it difficult to manage alone. Blessie became increasingly disoriented, restless at night, and struggled with communication, making it harder for Alex to provide the support she needed.

Harley Jai Care introduced a visiting dementia care service, providing specialist support while ensuring Alex could take much-needed breaks. The carers assisted with personal care, mobility, and cognitive stimulation exercises, helping Blessie stay engaged and comfortable. With their help, Alex was able to get some rest without feeling guilty, knowing that Blessie was in safe, experienced hands.

I never thought I’d need help caring for Mariam, but now I can’t imagine getting through this without Harley Jai Care. Their team understands dementia in a way I never could, and they’ve given both of us the support we desperately needed.

Mae Joy

At just 56 years old, Mae was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), a condition that primarily affects personality, behavior, and language. As a once-social and outgoing person, she struggled with changes in her emotions and difficulty finding words, which left her feeling isolated and frustrated.

Her husband, Butch, wanted her to continue living as independently as possible, but as Mae’s symptoms progressed, he knew she needed specialist dementia support. Harley Jai Care introduced tailored one-on-one support, helping Mae with structured activities, communication techniques, and emotional reassurance. Her carers encouraged gentle social interactions, memory games, and routine-based assistance, helping her stay connected to the world around her.

Dementia at this stage of life is terrifying, but Harley Jai Care has made it feel manageable. Their carers don’t just assist Rachel; they empower her, giving her the tools to keep living her life with dignity.

Irene

At 78 years old, Irene was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and her family quickly noticed changes in her memory, mood, and ability to manage everyday tasks. She would often forget to take her medication, struggle with meal preparation, and become anxious when her routine was disrupted.

Her daughter, Juliebeth, wanted to ensure Irene could remain in the home she loved, surrounded by familiar comforts. Harley Jai Care stepped in to provide daily dementia care, offering gentle reminders, structured routines, and meaningful engagement to help Irene feel secure. Her carer, Francis, introduced memory cues, music therapy, and consistent daily schedules, which helped reduce Irene’s anxiety and enhance her independence.

Mum is still Mum, and thanks to Harley Jai Care, she’s able to stay in her home where she feels safe. The carers have become part of our family, and knowing she’s well cared for has taken a huge weight off my shoulders.
